THERE is no better introduction to Melbourne than attending the Lord Mayor’s Student Welcome. The event will be held at Signal (located behind Flinders Street Station) this Saturday March 5.

The event is specially catered for international students new to the city, and is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the Australian culture and all its diversity.

The afternoon’s multicultural events will kick off at 1pm, and promises to be a fun-filled afternoon with live entertainment including hip-hop, Bollywood, and indigenous dance performances.

For the adventurous foodie, do drop by and sample some unique Australian fare as organisers get the barbecue (or “barbie”, as the locals like to call it) going – complete with crocodile and kangaroo sausages.

And for the brave, you may like the chance to pet a snake or lizard.

Other fun things to do include hands-on activities like face painting and cork hat making.

The City of Melbourne will also be there on the day to provide information on services available to students, as well as to answer any questions you may have.

Other services represented at the event – the Australian Federation of International Students (AFIS), “The Couch” International Student Centre, Victoria Police and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade.

So do mark down this Saturday on your calendar, grab this opportunity to be introduced to the delights of Aussie culture, and meet fellow students from all walks of life.

The Lord Mayor’s Student Welcome 2011 will be held at Signal, Flinders Walk, Northbank, Melbourne VIC 3001 (behind Flinders Street Station, towards Sandridge Bridge), from 1pm to 4pm.
