THE annual L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival is here again, and Meld Magazine beauty columnist Roseanne Tang headed downtown yesterday to the Marie Claire and L’Oreal Paris Beauty Workshop to bring you the top tips and looks this season.

LET’S just say the Marie Claire and L’Oreal Paris Beauty Workshop exceeded my expectations.

As an already avid beauty enthusiast, I expected to ride through the workshop and leave with only one or two tips, too much information on Loreal products and a Marie Claire magazine.

But it turned out to be engaging, enthralling, and full of beauty secrets supplied by none other than the great Rae Morris, one of Australia’s most influential make-up artists. I have one of her books sitting on my side-table actually so seeing her in person was more than a pleasant surprise.

The stage was set up for three models, three makeup artists, the beauty editor of Marie Claire magazine and Rae Morris giving tips and advice for three of this season’s trends: natural make-up, statement eyes and luscious and bold lips.

And here’s how you do it:

.

Natural Make-Up

Natural make-up is all about matching your skin with your make-up. Rae Morris advises, along with using a sunscreen and primer, to apply foundation with a brush. A sponge soaks up too much of the foundation.

She also insists that you go along and try to work with the skin you have.  For example, people with oily skin should not try to be matte but reapply liquid foundations throughout the day and always be prepared to blot.

Textures should also be matched. Rather than using a powder blush on a liquid foundation, you should instead use a cream blush as the cream on cream and powder on powder rule applies.

When it comes to concealers, cream concealers are best for older woman and concealers should always be applied after your foundation. This uses less concealer as well.

Another key tip is to always blot your eyelids before you apply your eye makeup as our eyelids sometimes tend to be the greasiest part of skin.

.

Statement Eyes

Smoky statement eyes have lasted for seasons. But this time round, the emphasis is on giving them the sexy, glam factor with a more polished and sophisticated look.

Rae suggests you turn your brush upside down starting from your lid line to apply a dark smoky shadow. This will cause a gradation to occur with the darkest shade closest to the lid line.

A winged tip liquid liner will complete the look and is done easily by putting a piece of sticky tape angled from the outer corner of the eye. Draw the liner and don’t be afraid of making a slightly jagged edge as the tape will be taken off to reveal a straight and professional edge.

To find out which eye-shadow colors suit you best, simply consult a color wheel. The colors that will suit you best will be either the color of your eye, or the colors opposite to the color of your eye on the color wheel. For example, green eyes go well with green shades or purple shades. Blue eyes go well with blue shades or browns, gold or apricots while brown eyes will match chocolate or blue shadows.

For brows, you should shade upwards along the hairline to give a well-defined frame to your face.

.

Luscious Lips

Bold luscious lips are a key trend this season, and a lip liner is essential to achieving the look.

People sometimes think lip liners are for outlining the lip, but they should actually be used to fill in the entire lip (but do make sure you keep within the perimeters of your lips).

Lip liners help lock in colour, providing a better base for lipstick and prevents colour bleeding, which is a typical problem when using bold coloured lip products.

To make lips fuller, a bit of highlight can be added to the cupids bow.

Rae also suggests using a lip brush to apply lip colors for a defined bold lip. A tip from me is to lightly pat a bold color on your lips. This gives a slightly “bitten” look that is sexy for all occasions.

If bold lips are your thing, look for shades similar to your skin-tone to achieve a softer look.
