Namewee celebrating Merdeka in Melbourne
CONTROVERSIAL Malaysian YouTube sensation Namewee will be in Melbourne next week to usher in Malaysia’s independence day with a concert and the world premiere of his debut film, Nasi Lemak 2.0.
Namewee , or Wee Meng Chee, became an instant celebrity in 2007 when his YouTube parody of Malaysia’s national anthem, ‘Negarakuku’, went viral with its satirical and thought-provoking lyrics on Malaysian life and politics.
One album and more than 19 million YouTube hits later, Namewee has established a reputation for himself as one of Malaysia’s foremost social commentators through his music.
He will be performing live in Australia for the first time at “Merdeka in Melbourne 2011”, a party at Billboard the Venue on Tuesday, August 30 along with Malaysian DJs Goldfish & Blink and model Felixia Yeap.
The following day he will premiere his musical comedy, Nasi Lemak 2.0, at Hoyts Melbourne Central – ahead of it’s Malaysian debut on September 8.
The movie – both written and directed by Namewee – will follow the journey of Chef Huang (Namewee) as he discovers what it truly means to be Malaysian with the help of his friends.
Co-stars Adibah Noor, Felixia Yeap , Nadine Ann Thomas and Dennis Lau will be at the premiere.
