FROM pliés to pirouettes, this weekend The Australian Ballet brings together dancers from all ranks and experiences for a free performance under a canopy of stars. Regina Karis has all the details of the Telstra Ballet in the Bowl.

This is not the first time ballet has been performed outdoors in Melbourne. In 1966, the Australian Ballet hosted its first outdoor performance as part of the Moomba Festival, attracting some 3000 viewers with tickets costing only 20 cents per person.

This year the event takes place on Friday, March 8, 8pm and costs absolutely nothing. On this magical night, The Australian Ballet will feature some of the world of ballet’s greatest hits, including excerpts from the lively Spanish family favourite Don Quixote and the ever iconic ballet classic Swan Lake.

Even better, all performances that night will be accompanied by Orchestra Victoria, Australia’s leading opera and ballet orchestra, promising the event to be a sensational experience for the senses.

The event will also be a triumphant homecoming for Amy Harris, the 2012 Telstra Ballet Dancer Award winner. It will be the first time the Victorian-born ballerina performs in her home state after winning the accolade last November.

Telstra Ballet in the Bowl takes place at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Arts Centre Melbourne, St Kilda Road at 8pm this Friday, March 8. Tickets are to be booked on Ticketmaster or at the gate on the day of the event, which opens at 4pm.
