Banjo and Matilda

SELF-CONFESSED bargain buyer Diane Leowbrings you what’s hot in fashion and where to go to get this season’s looks for less.

Warm, comfy and printed

As students, we love dressing up, but as the winter chill comes in, we know those last few minutes in bed are oh-so-important.

One of the best ways to look chic this season while staying comfortable and warm is to don a jumper with cute prints and skinny pants or jeans, as showcased by luxe knitwear label Banjo & Matilda.

Perfect for a day of tutorials and running errands, we think.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to look chic and be warm all at once! Here are some ideas from shops around town (or in the virtual world).

Let your sweet side show with this wool knit jumper by See U Soon, $43.80, available on ASOS. Pair it with a bright skirt or coloured skinny jeans, plus ankle boots and you’re all set to look chic and feel warm!

Rug up with this Eiffel Tower knit dress, $35, from ASOS that will keep you warm without burning a hole in your pocket.

Put on this cute knit jumper with embroidered boats, $38.54, from ASOS and dream of a beach holiday on warmer shores. It’s great paired with a skater skirt or skinny jeans and ankle boots.

Add some colour to your wardrobe with this lightweight IDS We Love Jumper in Lilac, $21, with a heart-shaped motif. Sometimes, all you need is love! This oversized jumper works well over leggings or skinny jeans and a cute beret or beanie – perfect for days you feel like snuggling under a blanket but need to brave the weather.

Mix and Match it

Varying your outfit with different textures is all the rage this season. Don’t be afraid to mix it up! Luxe fabrics like velvet and punk-rock styles like pleather and studs are in, so have fun with it and let your adventurous side show.

Versatility meets comfort in this t-shirt dress with pleather panels from IDS. Great for dressier days or a fancy dinner, it’s not skin-tight so you have room to eat! Plus at $28 it’s a great bargain.

These two-toned pants make a bold statement, and are a great way to dress up your outfit without adding a pop of colour for just $31.50. Pair them with a plain t-shirt or collared shirt and a statement necklace and you’re good to go.

Not that into black? Rock that edgy side with this blue skater skirt with velvet motifs from IDS, $24.50. Pair this pleather skirt with tights and a plain top, plus some boots for a great night out or a dressy day at uni.

Want to keep things simple while keeping right on trend? Check out this leather-look skater skirt, $31.54, available on ASOS.com. Casual enough for uni and stylish enough for a night out, this one’s a keeper.

Demure dreams

With the cooler weather, short hemlines are out and demure is in with knee-length and midi dresses.

Dreamy fabrics are our choice for this look. Just take a peek at the collections by Colette and Alannah Hill, both of which are heavy in luxe knits and pastel lace this season.

I’m loving the contrast in styles. You can either be really grungy with pleather or girly with lace and pastels, or mix it up with various pieces from both textures to suit your style.

Layering up in winter doesn’t have to be boring, especially with this wool cream cardigan that features a dainty lace trim. Priced at $26.28, it won’t blow your winter wardrobe budget out of the water. It’s pretty versatile, too – button it up and pair with skinny jeans or a midi skirt, or layer it over a blouse of your choice.

Exude ladylike glamour with this navy lace midi skirt from ASOS, $28.03. The longer length makes it appropriate for dressier occasions and school presentations. This piece is easy to dress up or down, too – pair it with a denim shirt and flats for casual days, or a dressier top and heels if you need it glam it up a little.

Showcase your feminine side with this jumper that has a standout crochet collar from Ally Fashion, $24.99. Wear these with skinny jeans, or a skirt and tights to recreate the dreamy look for less.

If monochrome colours are more your style, you can still add a little dainty touch to your wardrobe with this black shirt with a lace collar by Vero Moda, from ASOS, $24.53. Accentuated with gold buttons, you can be both edgy and dainty!
