This weekend, support your fellow students by taking part in the creative MUDFest, enjoy some fireworks down at Docklands or plan for the future at Herald Sun’s Career Expo. Here’s Elizabeth Yick with more.

MUDFest
From Thursday, August 15; the University of Melbourne (Grattan Street, Parkville)

MUDFest is the largest student arts festival in Australia. To some, it may be that couple of weeks at university where weird things happen and funny people dressed up to sing and dance, but it is in fact a very credible arts festival with 22 years of success. Now in its 23rd year, MUDFest is aiming to be bigger, better, and more reputable than ever.

MUDFest has been organised and run by students since 2011, and in recent years has boasted a participation rate of more than 500 student artists, as well as those who have gone onto professional careers in the arts, such as director Michael Kantor, playwrights Lally Katz and Angus Cerini, and producer Stephen Armstrong.

Exhibitions cover five disciplines – music, interarts, film, theatre, and visual art – all of which showcase the work of emerging artists. This year, the theme is “Make It New!”, which encourages festival participants to venture into unchartered territory and to push beyond established boundaries.

For an extended look at MUDFest, read Regina Karis’ overview of the event where she speaks to Eric Gardiner, one of MUDFest’s festival organisers. Events at the festival are mostly free – for various events please refer to the detailed program available on the MUDFest official website.

Docklands Fireworks
Friday, August 16 (6.15pm – 7.45pm); Docklands Piazza, Docklands

Proudly presented by the City of Melbourne, the Docklands will be lit up every Friday night with dazzling fireworks that is sure to start off your weekend with a bang!

Beginning after sunset, visitors are encouraged to grab a glow-stick and join in on the entertainment along the waterfront promenade.

Live performances include shows by daring fire artists, acrobatic stilt-walkers, and other amazing artists from the Westside Circus.

There will also be live music and much more fun throughout the evening to bring the Docklands to life and kick-start the weekend!

Herald Sun Melbourne Career Expo
Friday, August 16 (10am – 3pm); Saturday August 17 & Sunday August 18 (10am – 4pm); Melbourne Exhibition Centre (Clarendon Street, Southbank)

The Melbourne Career Expo is an interactive event that provides attendees with comprehensive information on opportunities in education and employment.

Now in its twelfth consecutive year, the annual expo hosts a range of education providers and industry employers, providing attendees with the opportunity to speak with representatives of different institutes and universities.

In addition, the expo provides a number of free up-skill seminars, résumé and interview workshops, as well as the chance to learn about less conventional career pathways with niche companies.

Tickets are available at the venue, and are priced at $12 for adults and $6 for students/concession. However, a free ticket may be obtained on the Career Expo official site by filling in a form.

There are more than 200 exhibitors from both Australia and internationally, and is an event not to missed by both students and professionals alike.
