STAYING in Melbourne this Christmas? Don’t miss the Boulevard’s spectacular display of Christmas lights! Diane Leow and Nadia J.H. bring you a sneak peek.

Christmastime is something quite special in Melbourne. Even though a white Christmas is out of the question (unless it hails), there’s plenty to look forward to – from gorgeous window displays in the city to amazing Christmas light displays all around.

The Boulevard Christmas Lights has been going on for over 60 years, and is one of Melbourne’s longest-standing traditions.

The residents of the Boulevard decorate their houses, gardens, and windows – bringing joy to thousands of visitors each year.

Sam Zappulla, one of the residents at the Boulevard, says, “Christmas to us is all about family – it’s not so much about the lights. It’s the fact that all the families get together.”

Indeed, thousands of people visit the Boulevard each year to get into the Christmas spirit.

Sarah Clarke is one of them – visiting the Boulevard Christmas Lights is a tradition for her.

“You have to come every single year to see the Ivanhoe Boulevard Lights. I love it! I’m loving all of the lights. It’s just beautiful, and puts me right in the Christmas spirit,” she gushes.

It is best to experience the lights by foot as traffic can get quite congested. Plus, ice-cream vans and hot chocolate stands will be around – so you may relive your childhood if you wish.

To get there, catch a train to Ivanhoe train station. The Boulevard is just a short walk away. Alternatively, if you’re carpooling, parking is available at Ivanhoe Station and East Ivanhoe Shopping Centre, where you can have a bite to eat before experiencing this Melbourne tradition.

The lights run from December 14 – 24 this year, from 8.30pm to 11.00pm.
