Malaysian and Indonesian students injured in Perth bus crash

MALAYSIAN and Indonesian international students were injured in a bus crash last week while on the way to an environmental education seminar in Western Australia. Tara Jade Amici reports.

International students from Malaysia and Indonesia were injured in a bus crash on Wednesday 21 May in Perth’s Gidgegannup, a mountainous area.

According to Perth Now, 24 people were on board the bus at the time of the incident, 14 of whom were students from Malaysia and Indonesia.

The remaining passengers were adults who were also Malaysian nationals.

The injured were taken to the Royal Perth Hospital, Princess Margarest Hospital, and Swan Districts Hospital for treatment.

The students, aged 10 to 12, were on their way to Lake Leschenaultia for an environmental education seminar when the bus skidded and rolled into a ditch, leaving some passengers trapped inside.

The students were scheduled to attend a two-day forum by the Swan River Trust. Millennium Kids, a not-for-profit organisation, were hosting the international students.

Two Malaysian students spoke to The West Australian about the incident.

“It was the scariest thing ever, I was playing with my friend’s tablet and suddenly the teachers were screaming and suddenly the bus tipped over,” Nayli Ramlan, 12, said.

Nur Amirah, 11, said her friends were screaming and shouting while trying to get out of the bus.

“The bus tipped over to the left, I was sitting on the right but fell off my seat and ended up under the left seat,” she said.

Officers from the Major Crash unit have ruled out alcohol as a contributing factor to the crash. They believe the foggy weather and limited visibility could have been factors, Perth Now reported.

Ten Malaysian students returned to Malaysia yesterday with four of the accompanying teachers, according to Malay Mail Online.

All involved in the accident are in stable conditions.
