Winter skincare for all skin types

UNUSED to the dry Melbourne winter? Students from Trinity College Foundation Studies Rosana Yuwono and Clara Tang share their tried and tested beauty buys for women and men, and different skin types.

Melbourne’s winter can be harsh and dry for those accustomed to tropical climates, but fear not, we have the perfect skincare routine for you, regardless of gender and skin type!

Step 1: Exfoliator

Finding the right facial wash product has never been an easy task. With Melbourne’s exceptionally dry weather, it is important that you exfoliate your face regularly to remove flaky skin.

For our ladies, we recommend exfoliators like The Face Shop’s Peeling Day for sensitive skin, The Body Shop Vitamin C Microdermabrasion for normal skin, to be used before your usual facial cleansers. Philosophy’s Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash is also effective for all skin types and works for men as well.

Step 2: Cleanser

It is important to choose the right cleanser for your skin type, especially in this weather. If you’re not sure who to ask, head to popular and reliable websites to read reviews. We recommend Youtube channels like oiseau88 or beautifymeeh.

Products to try include Kiehl’s Purifying Foaming Cleanserfor all skin types. For those with sensitive skin, consider Avene’s soapless foaming gel. If you like, we also suggest using the widely raved device Clarisonic. This device claims to cleanse your face 6 times better than using hands alone, and we strongly recommend this to those who apply make up everyday. We assure you that the Clarisonic is worth every cent!

Step 3: Toner

Toners are important to soothe and prepare your skin for your daily skincare routine. For those with normal skin, we recommend choose Shiseido’s Aqualabel Moisture Lotion. Those with oily/combination skin can consider going for Laneige’s Power Essential Skin Refiner. For guys, however, we would recommend La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water. It is definitely more fuss-free – just spray it on!

TIP

  • Those with sensitive skin must avoid toners that contain alcohol because it dries out your skin even more!

Step 4: Essence, serum or emulsion

This step often goes unnoticed, but it is extremely important! Emulsions and essences have the sole purpose of extra hydration. They must be applied before your moisturiser, as they are absorbed into the skin quickly and locks in moisture that is essential in Melbourne’s harsh weather. Laneige’s Water Bank Essence is suitable for all skin types – yes, including males!

Step 5: Moisturiser

In Melbourne’s winter, it is doubly important to moisturise! For dry to normal skin types, we recommend Laneige’s Water Bank Moisture Cream or you can consider Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream Intense Hydration. For extra hydration throughout your face, apply Laneige’s Water Bank Eye Gel to prevent dryness in your under-eye area. For gentlemen, try Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion.

TIPS

  • If you have oily skin, try to find water-based moisturisers like Neutrogena Water Boost or Kiehl’s Sodium PCA Oil-Free Moisturiser.
  • Those with dry skin should look out for thicker, nourishing creams to help alleviate skin dryness.
  • Do not apply moisturisers under your eyes! The skin under your eyes are thinner than the rest of your face. Hence, they need gentler products than your usual moisturisers!

Step 6: Sunscreen

Statistics by the Cancer Council Australia have shown that 99% of skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun. So slap on some sunscreen before you head out! We recommend Kiehl’s Ultra Light Defence for those with normal skin and Biore’s UV Aqua Rich for those with oily skin as this is a water-based sunscreen. Guys can choose to use Kiehl’s Facial Fuel UV Guard SPF 50+ for men.

TIP: Always opt for SPF 50 PA+++ because the higher the SPF, the longer lasting the sunscreen.

For some extra pampering…

A regular mask, while seemingly troublesome, can do wonders. Consider the famous Laneige Water Sleeping Pack – its reputation is unrivalled. An alternative would  be Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Masque. These two products are suitable for all skin types and all genders!
