NEVER had the courage to try Vegemite? Trinity College Foundation Studies students Nadiah Masri, Doi Aung Ja and Samantha T Santos give it a go and offer up four recipes that they’ve tried and loved.

So what is the gooey brown mess called Vegemite that Australians are so enraptured by?

Vegemite is a spread that is made up of yeast extract, created and perfected by Dr. Cyril P Callister, who was Australia’s leading technologist in the 1920s and 1930s, and it has been a staple in Australian households since 1942.

The taste? It is very savoury, with notes of bitterness and maltiness. The secret to enjoying Vegemite is to avoid the temptation of slathering a huge glob of it on your toast. A thin layer would usually suffice.

Still scared of trying Vegemite? Fret not! Here are four easy and hassle-free Vegemite sandwich recipes that can help you get started.

The classic Vegemite toast

Ingredients
Vegemite
Butter
2 slices of bread

This is a must-try for all who are new to Vegemite.

Pop two slices of bread into the toaster, slap the butter onto both slices of toast, followed by a thin layer of vegemite on only one slice of  toast. Sandwich them together and voila!

Ingredients:
Vegemite
Cheese
Butter
2 slices of bread

A cheesy vegemite sandwich is another Australian favourite. Again, get your bread ready in the toaster, add a generous amount of butter and spread a sparing amount of Vegemite evenly on one piece of toast. Add a slice of cheese and sandwich the two pieces of toast together. Tomatoes and lettuce are optional extras.

Ingredients
Vegemite
Scrambled eggs
Butter
2 slices of white bread

For this recipe, prepare your Vegemite toast as in the first recipe. Place the scrambled eggs on piece of toast, top it off with the other slice of toast, and you’re done! Delicioso!

Vegemite with avocado sandwich

Ingredients
Vegemite
Butter
Avocado slices/spread
2 slices of bread

Like Vegemite and cheese, Vegemite and avocado go really well together. It sounds a little strange, but it really is a match made in heaven.

Spread butter on both slices of your toasted bread and Vegemite only on one. Place the avocado slices (you can use as much avocado as you want) on the toast with the Vegemite, sandwich with the other piece of toast and that’s it!
