IN need of some style inspiration this season? Natalie Ng was at the recent Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival’s inaugural Famous For Fashion: Street Style Runway Show and brings you the coolest Autumn/Winter 2016 trends.

Street style and fashion has never been more accessible as blogs and social media are turning ordinary people into fashion stars overnight and in their own right. In that way, it seems fashion has become more democratic.

Recognising the influence of fashion bloggers, VAMFF kicked off its first Street Style Runway presented by Cosmopolitan Magazine, held just off Chapel Street, iconic for its place in Melbourne fashion and style. The labels featured this year included Autonomy, Diesel, Ryder, Sir., Stevie May and Tallulah.

The show was a celebration of local designers as all except for Diesel were homegrown labels with stores in Melbourne, including of course Chapel St itself.

They brands captured a unique facet of Australian fashion and culture from the laid-back style of Ryder and Autonomy to the vibrancy of Tallulah that calls to mind Australia’s street art.

Thanks to the nature of the ‘street style’ DNA of this runway show, many of the looks can be adapted by students for everyday wear. 70’s continues to be a major influence with fashion designers and the trends this year, from oversized sunglasses and floppy hats to earth-toned colours and the coolest jackets and coats.

Here are some of the highlights and key looks that students can be inspired to carry off this Autumn/Winter in Melbourne:

Bomber Jackets

Bomber jackets, especially the loud ones are all the rage this season. This is a trend where it’s either go big or go home. These two from the show are from Diesel and  feature the coolest colour combinations and designs. Keep your outfit relatively toned down with neutral or a minimal colour palette and throw on your unique bomber jacket to stand out in the crowd and keep warm at the same time.

Covetable Coats

Go classic chic with a camel coloured coat like this piece from Autonomy or comfy cool with a duffel coat from Ryder. The cuts of these coats are both tried and tested styles that should be in every wardrobe for either the times when you want to look timeless or when you want to be both snug and chic.

70’s and Festival Inspired

70’s and festival inspired fashion will continue to be on trend this year. This look from Diesel pairs a flowy bohemian gown with a contrasting fringe jacket to keep things balanced. Or go full 70’s like this look from Stevie May with knee high boots with a white lace mini dress and a vibrant kimono, topping it all off with a floppy hat. Swap out the boots for sandals and ditch the hat if you want to tone down the look for everyday wear while still keeping that 70’s inspiration intact.

Funky Cold Weather Accessories

You can continue to have fun with fashion even as the autumn and winter season descends on Melbourne. Talulah shows us exactly how to add some fun to any outfit with their exuberant accessories. Keep your outfits simple with clean silhouettes and throw on an oversized, brightly coloured faux fur scarf to take this runway look to the streets.  Pairing a huge faux fur scarf with pom pom shoes might be too much for campus life, so save those fun shoes for a night out with friends.
