Lord Mayor’s Student Welcome 2012

WE’RE especially excited about the Lord Mayor’s Student Welcome taking place at City Square from 2 to 5pm this Saturday!

Year on year, Meld has been religiously covering the event held bi-annually to celebrate the contribution international students and overseas-born Australians make towards the diverse multicultural city that is Melbourne.

But this year, we’re doing things a little differently.

In addition to providing editorial coverage, we’re getting in front of the camera for a change as part of the Chop Sew’y Paper Fashion show. So come and see if you can spot the Meld dress among the other stunning paper outfits designed by international students under the guidance of Melbourne artist Colleen Burke.

We’ll also be setting up a booth on the day, so do come by and say hi, and find out how you can win some free prizes we’ve got up for grabs!

There are of course plenty of other happenings worth checking out.

This year’s event will be hosted by sexy female comedian Justine McInerney, better known asJMAC.

And if you like dance, be sure to catch Katumba, Melbourne’s one and only authentic Latin and Brazilian dance experience; Fresh off the Block, a hip-hop and breakdance showcase (featuring hip hop dancer and So You Think You Can Dance Australia top four finalist Demi Sorono); and Bollywood and Soran Bushi, performed by students.

Music lovers also shouldn’t miss the Blackberry Jam Bush Band providing you fun, joyful bush music, bush dance and entertainment.

And whether you’re a lover of nature or not, we definitely recommend you acquaint yourself with the Australian bush and wildlife at Roaming Reptiles. Watch a crocodile get fed on stage (yes a live one!) and get close to pet snakes and lizards.

There will also be free face painting, a photo booth, roving performers and more activities than we have space to mention here. It’s an event worth check out, so be there or be square (yes, pun totally intended).

The Lord Mayor’s Student Welcome is a free event and will take place from 2 to 5pm this Saturday March 24 at City Square, 44-86 Swanston St, Melbourne. Follow the Lord Mayor’s Student Welcome on Facebook.
