SO much of what we know about the “birds and the bees” comes from movies, even silly ones like American Pie. But amidst all the hilarity, there are some gems of wisdom. Danielle Frazzetto lists a few, with the help of the team.

These days, most of us know too much about sex even before our parents get to the “birds and the bees” talk. A lot of what we learn comes from conversations with friends and by watching films instead of our folks’ carefully scripted explanations.

Here are some of the films that have provided us with worthy, and sometimes humorous lessons about sex. And the embarrassing moments we all hope to never experience.

Let’s start with some comedy favourites.

Road Trip (2000)

This movie revolves around Josh, who gets a harsh dose of karma after he accidentally sends a sex tape of him cheating to his girlfriend.

Well the message here is obvious: don’t cheat. Aside from being morally questionable, having multiple sexual partners can risk your health and expose you to STIs.

Well, there are these rules that guys have, an understanding as to what exactly constitutes cheating. Take your situation for example: it’s not cheating. It’s never cheating when you’re in a different area code, not to mention a different state.

(Not true!)

American Pie (1999)

The American Pie series has spanned a total of eight films, including a few spin-offs. But in the original movie, we meet Jim Levenstein and his three mates who attempt to lose their virginity before high school ends.

Their quest is hilarious, but there are also a few important lessons, including how your first time can be overrated, especially if you’re rushing into it. So take your time. Plus, there are always…apple pies.

And while, yes, sex can be a big deal – don’t let it consume your relationship either. Or your partner may end up feeling like Vicky:

Maybe the words aren’t that important. It’s like, I know he really cares about me, you know even if he can’t say if he does. And yeah, he always talks about sex, but that’s ok cause he’s a guy, right?

She’s Out of My League (2010)

Also hilarious and humiliating is She’s out of my League. The film explores the importance of having confidence, sharing the tale of an average guy, Kirk, who meets the perfect woman, Molly, but struggles to keep it together.

It also highlights how crucial it is to be accepting and open, especially when you’re at your most vulnerable during more intimate moments. Just look at how Kirk reacted when he discovered one of Molly’s “defects” in the bedroom.

Also, there’s nothing wrong with waiting for that special someone. As one character, Devon, says:

I’m tired of you guys busting my nuggets cause I’ve only been with one girl. It’s cause she was the right girl! That’s why I married her!

Friends with Benefits (2011)

In this movie, two friends start sleeping together but soon discover adding sex to their friendship leads to complications.

Aside from the talented (and attractive) cast, the film highlights the importance of picking the right person and how to find a true friend in your partner.

I mean, sure. We’d have fun, roll around. Get into some erotic humiliation fantasy…which would blow up in our faces, end badly. And we’d never speak to each other again!

Saved (2004)

The film follows a Christian high school student who becomes pregnant and soon finds herself ostracised and demonised by those she thought were her friends.

Aside from the reminder of the importance of using protection, this movie also spruiks the message that we all make mistakes, no matter what our religion. Having people you can rely on will also help you get through it. There also places you can go to for advice like Family Planning Victoria.

Look, don’t be too harsh. I’m not the first person to ever get the message screwed up.

Easy A (2010)

This film focuses on a clean-cut high school student who relies on a school rumor to advance herself and several boys into social and financial standing.

In a manner of speaking, we suppose talking about having sex can be a lot safer than actually having it. But if there’s one lesson we can take away from this movie, it’s that words and rumours can get out of hand.

The rumors of my promiscuity have been greatly exaggerated.
