Celebrate you at the Lord Mayor’s Student Welcome 2013
IT’S your day this Saturday! The Lord Mayor’s Student Welcome is an annual celebration and recognition of the contribution international students make to Melbourne’s social and cultural identity. Jessica-Anne Lyons brings you this year’s highlights.
Whether you’re newly arrived in Melbourne or already familiar with the city, don’t miss the Lord Mayor’s Student Welcome this Saturday April 6 from 2 to 5pm.
Taking place at Queensbridge Square in Southbank, it’ll be an afternoon of activities, performances and the opportunity to meet other students.
Melbourne’s Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, says the event is a celebration and recognition of the enormous contribution local and international students make to Melbourne’s social and cultural identity.
“The event is part of the City of Melbourne’s commitment to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of international students, studying and living in the city,” he says.
The event will kick off with an “Alice in Wonderland” inspired fashion show, so if you’re a Fashionista, come early!
This performance-style runway has been pegged as the highlight of the entire Welcome, featuring upcoming international designers – Black Sunshine Clothing, Von Chibi, Miss Contrary, The Little Tailor, Saiai, Cherry Pie Accessories and Lorelle Rouge.
Also worth looking forward too are the dance performances by the hip-hop group Kstar Evolutionz featured on Australia’s Got Talent, the Bounczn Dance Company and the Katumba Latin American Dancers.
Plus there will also be an energy-packed African Drumming performance by ZAZU and VoyeuRhythmic.
And if you’ve been itching to see a real Australian reptile, don’t forget to catch the Roaming Reptiles: Reptile Talk at 3:30pm.
There’ll be plenty of action taking place off-stage too. Meet the crew from the Bounczn Dance Company, enjoy the talents of roving performers, visit the petting zoo full of cute and cuddly creatures and even have your face painted!
Don’t forget to pick up a free show bag, which contains a copy of the 2013 International Student Guide among other goodies. Plus, there are prizes up for grabs all afternoon.
This event is expected to draw some 1500 to 2000 students – so it’s definitely not one to miss!
Meld will be there too on the day, so do drop by our booth to say hi!
