Malaysian home-cooking-with Aunty Khoo’s

SO, you want to learn to cook nasi lemak? Take part in a cooking class where you’ll learn to recreate your favourite dishes from Malaysia! It’s all part of our brand new At Home and Abroad cultural experience workshops.

If your mouth waters every time friends back home share tantalising photos of nasi lemak on Instagram at midnight, here’s your chance to combat some of that food envy – by learning to make your own!

Together with the City of Melbourne, Meld Magazine will be hosting a Malaysian home-cooking class next Sunday July 28 as part of our brand new At Home and Abroad cultural experience workshops.

Aunty Khoo’s – the team behind last year’s sold out Mamak Night – will be showing you how to make nasi lemak complete with sambal from scratch (that’ll show your friends back home, ha!).

To accompany, they’ll show you how to create a ‘teh c peng special’ (a deliciously sweet three-layer milk tea), and for dessert, get your hands dirty with kneading, filling and rolling your own onde onde – a traditional bite-sized Malaysian dessert made with sweet potato or glutinous rice flour, and filled with palm sugar and rolled in grated coconut. We’re salivating just talking about it!

For an extra bit of fun, there’ll also be an opportunity to show off your wok-tossing skills in an Indo Mee Goreng cook-off.

There are prizes to be won, recipe cards for everyone to take home, and of course, a chance to dig in to these classic Malaysian dishes.

Everyone is welcome, and best of all, this event is free… almost! All you need is a gold coin donation for entry.

If you can’t wait to dig in, sign up now!

The cooking demonstration will be held on Sunday July 28 from 4 to 6pm at Urban Garden, Basement, 488 Swanston St, Carlton.

Spaces are limited, so do register early to avoid disappointment. If you have questions, or would like more information, head to our Facebook event page.
