The Australian Government Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) has announced that the Pearson Test of English will be accepted for visa applications from November 2014.

This is the first time in 13 years that applicants for skilled, temporary graduate, work, holiday, and former resident visas will “have the opportunity to choose which English test best suits them”, says Emma Stubbs, Senior Vice-President of Pearson Language Testing.

All subclasses will be affected with the only exception of subclass 457, as it is currently being reviewed.

Besides the Pearson Test of English (PTE), applicants can choose to take the International English Language Test System (IELTS), the Occupational English Test (OET) or the Test of English Language as a Foreign Language  internet-based test (TOEFL iBT).

PTE is also accepted by the UK Visa & Immigration Department. The PTE (Academic) was adopted by Australian universities as proof of English-language ability for evaluating international students since 2011.

PTE test centres are located in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.
