FTW: Double passes to see ‘Nightcrawler’
SEE an unhinged Jake Gyllenhaal in his new film, Nightcrawler, when it releases nationally on November 27. Hieu Chau explains how you can win one of five double passes to see the film.
Those who’ve been following Jake Gyllenhaal‘s acting career as of late will no doubt notice his string of peculiarly interesting choices in the last couple of years.
From the machismo bravura of End of Watch to the mysteriously intriguing film, Enemy, Gyllenhaal has continued to push for material some may assume would appear to be out of his reach.
Nightcrawler, his newest film, is no different. As the highly-motivated Lou Bloom, a man who speaks like a motivational poster come to life, Gyllenhaal brings to the character the unnerving charm of Taxi Driver‘s Travis Bickle and Psycho‘s Norman Bates.
One lonely night, Bloom drives by a fatal car crash and witnesses a news video team capturing its chaos on their cameras and speeding off to return the footage to a news station. “If it bleeds, it leads,” Bloom learns and he becomes instantly hooked into the world of ‘nightcrawling’ – roving around the city scavenging for crime news footage.
With conviction behind every word he spouts, Lou ensares an unwitting helper to assist him in navigating the underbelly of Los Angeles’ crime-ridden suburbs and forms a working relationship with news producer, Nina.
Focusing on the ethics of news journalism and partly illustrating a critique of the modern age of sensationalist journalism, Nightcrawler is a thrilling tour across Los Angeles’ crime-ridden underbelly anchored by a magnetic performance from a very creepy but very good Jake Gyllenhaal.
