SHAKE off those winter blues and embrace a new wardrobe this sunny season as the Melbourne Spring Fashion Week rolls into town. Yuzuha Oka has her choice picks for students to attend at this year’s fashion event. 

The long and cold winter is finally coming to an end, and it’s time to give your wardrobe a sunnier and brighter update.

If you’re stuck for ideas on what to wear this coming Spring, get inspired by heading down to the Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, running from August 28 to September 4.

Packed with many runways to visit, activities to participate in, films to see, and various exhibitions and free events to attend,  the event features the following highlights you don’t want to miss.

Designer Opening Gala

Celebrate the official opening of the Melbourne Spring Fashion Week at Melbourne Town Hall on Tuesday, September 1.

The night will showcase extravagant couture from leading Australian designers with collections carefully crafted with luxurious fabrics.

Some of these designers have even bonded their cultural heritage into their designs such as Akira Isogawa (akira) from Japan, Rosemary Masic (nevenka) from Eastern Europe, and Carla Zampatti from Italy.  

So You Want a Job in Fashion?

Ever dreamed of scoring that glamorous job in fashion?  

TheSo You Want a Job in Fashion? session is a FREE event that gathers professionals from a range of areas including design, manufacturing and retail to discuss what it takes to carve a career in the fashion industry.

Registration to the event is still required, though the experience gained from its interactive workshops will no doubt be invaluable to students looking to weave their way into the industry.

Mr

Dedicated to men’s fashion and style, the Mr runway presents the best in menswear for the upcoming Spring/Summer.

Featuring a range of stylish suits and classic ensembles across brands such as footwear specialists Aquila, boutique tailor Godwin Charli and 2012 GQ Designer of the Year winner, BRENTWILSON, there’s something here for all men looking to dress for a fancy occasion.

Emerging Runway and Designers Market

As part of the event’s continued nurturing of new and exciting talent, Melbourne Spring Fashion Week will be bringing two Emerging Runways and an Emerging Designers Market for those looking to discover the next big things in fashion and design.

Be inspired by fellow peers as students from RMIT, FashionMasters, Box Hill Institute, Kangan Institute, Holmesglen Institute and Whitehouse Institute of Design show off their bold and daring looks across two Emerging Runways.

Meanwhile, the Emerging Designers Market invites keen shoppers and collectors to have a browse through the piles upon piles of neat treasures. From clothing, jewelry, accessories and everything in between, shoppers can expect to find interesting little designs from 18 featured new talents.

Shop the City

Get hyped for a weekend full of exclusive offers and specially curated shopping experiences throughout the city.

Melbourne has been chosen as the first destination to kick off Vogue Fashion’s Night Out (VFNO), an international event running in 27 cities around the world.

Held in Melbourne for the first time, the event will features an outdoor runway at Emporium Melbourne as the Vogue Australia’s editor-in-chief Edwina McCann presents the opening.

From there, eager shoppers can head off to their favorite stores citywide, including Emporium Melbourne, Melbourne Central, Bourke Street Mall, and the various shopfronts on Collins St to find new collections to include in their Spring/Summer wardrobe.
