Love horror? Love coming of age stories? Want films directed by women? Then here’s the perfect film for you.

Raw follows 16-year-old Justine (Garance Marillier) who is admitted to a prestigious veterinary school. While there, she is forced to take part in a bizarre hazing ritual where she eats raw meat while her older sister and upperclassman Alexia (Ella Rumpf) watch on. This ordeal then unleashes an insatiable desire in the formerly vegan Justine to consume flesh.

Raw is the debut film from French director Julia Ducournau and became the buzz of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. It won the prestigious FIRPRESCI prize at the International Critics’ Week section and was labelled as “Suspiria meets Ginger Snaps” by Variety film critic Catherine Bray.

Sisterly bonds, sibling rivalry and the turmoil of coming of age as a teenage girl physically, emotionally and psychologically is explored in Ducournau’s blood-soaked debut film. The film pushes new boundaries in contemporary horror cinema and announces writer-director Ducournau as a new figure in the current wave of female genre filmmakers that includes directors like Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, 2014), and Australia’s very own Jennifer Kent (The Babadook, 2014).

Raw is not a film for the faint-hearted, but if you are willing to take that risk, Raw will be opening nationally on April 20.

To celebrate the national release of Raw, Meld Magazine has a whopping TEN double passes to give away that can be used at any cinema nationwide screening the film. This includes Melbourne’s very own Cinema Nova, The Sun Theatre, Lido Cinemas and Cameo Cinemas.

Competition closes this Friday, April 21.
