Yearning for a movie-going experience outside of a darkened cinema? Sol Ahn lets you know what films you can catch outdoors at the Maltesers Moonlight Cinema this year.

Cosy up with your friends and loved ones out on the grounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens once again as the Moonlight Cinema – this year hosted by Maltesers – returns to the great city of Melbourne. As it has with every other year that it has run, the Maltesers Moonlight Cinema promises to give audiences a uniquely different movie-going experience.

Maltesers Moonlight Cinema has recently announced its 2013 – 2014 program where avid movie-goers can look to a variety of great films to enjoy this holiday season.

The Conjuring (Friday, Dec 6)

Love being scared? From the twisted mind of director James Wan (Saw, Insidious) comes The Conjuring, a film about the true-life story of two paranormal investigators and their most memorably chilling case. Starring Oscar-nominated actress Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson (Insidious), attendants will fortunately be less frightened given the open environment of the Moonlight Cinema.

Grown Ups 2 (Saturday, Dec 7)

If comedy is more your thing, have a big night of laughs out on the lawn with Grown Ups 2. Featuring an all-star comedy cast including Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade and Kevin James, Grown Ups 2, this sequel follows on from the previous film and sees Sandler’s character return to his old hometown to settle down with his friends and family.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (Thursday, Dec 26 / Friday, Jan 24)

It may be out in cinemas right now but if you’re after a different viewing experience for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, then consider seeing it outdoors at the Moonlight Cinema. Following after the events of the first film, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) return to the death game arena once again in the face of a political uprising.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Friday, Jan 31)

Fantasy-epic, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, is the sequel to last year’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and will no doubt prove to be an interesting outdoors cinema experience given its grand scale and large fanbase (one can expect that people may turn up in costume!). The film continues to tell the story of Bilbo Baggins’ incredible adventure and eventual discovery of the One Ring.

Those of you wishing to celebrate birthdays or have a Christmas party out on the Moonlight Cinema’s lawn will find that there will be a strictly limited area where you can relax in the company of your friends (bookings of course are essential).

Patrons are more than welcome to have their own picnic by the moonlight though dinner can also be ordered at the stall. A candy bar is also present.

The Maltesers Moonlight Cinema commence on December 5, 2013 and run right through into the new year, finishing up on, March 30, 2014. For further details on the Maltesers Moonlight Cinema, including the full program and ticketing information, visit their official website.
