PAINTING and pizza, power pop from Perth and innovative media art – there’s plenty to see and do in Melbourne this weekend. Luke Henriques-Gomes has the details.
Saturday November 10 – Federation Square
Diwali is a five-day Indian holiday that is celebrated throughout the region. Though Australia is miles away, Celebrate India organisation is ensuring we’ll get the chance to enjoy the festivities too. On Saturday, Federation Square will be transformed with music, dancing and of course, food available for all. And come nightfall, prominent Melbourne landmarks such as Victorian Parliament, Melbourne Museum and Federation Square will be illuminated to celebrate the Festival of Lights. The Celebrate India website has more information.
Art and Pizza
Sunday November 11 – Ladro Greville, Prahran
Hosted by artist Dawn Tan, this workshop at Prahran restaurant Ladro Greville brings together two of Melbourne’s favourite things: art and food. Participants will learn the ins and outs of painting with watercolour, drawing inspiration from vegetables and ingredients from the Ladro kitchen. Then, when you’ve worked up an appetite with all that painting, the class will be treated to some delicious snacks from Ladro chef, Niko Pizzimenti. Bookings are essential. Contact Ladro at firstname.lastname@example.org or on 9510 2233. More information is available here.
Experimenta Speak to Me – 5th International Biennial of Media Art

Sons of Rico, Bayou and Lost Weekend at Ding Dong Lounge
Friday November 9 – Ding Dong Lounge
Perth boys Sons of Rico will be bringing their bright, punchy guitar pop all the way to Melbourne’s Ding Dong Lounge to launch their brand new single, “You Don’t Know What You’re Missin'”. The up and coming West Australians have already been given the tick of approval from Aussie rock stars The Living End, who recently handpicked the five-piece to share the stage with them on tour. With formidable support on Friday night coming from chilled out Melburnians Bayou and dance-rockers Lost Weekend, it’s sure to be a memorable night. Oztix has you sorted for tickets.
